The Chinese zodiac assigns one of twelve animal signs to every birth year, based on a repeating 12-year cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. This cycle is one of the oldest continuously used calendar systems in the world, with roots stretching back over two thousand years in Chinese culture, and it remains deeply woven into festivals, matchmaking traditions, and everyday conversation across much of East Asia today. Alongside the animal sign, each year is also linked to one of five elements — Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, or Earth — which cycle every two years, giving each animal sign a fuller, more nuanced version once every 60 years (a "complete" cycle in Chinese astrology, sometimes called a sexagenary cycle).
Traditional Chinese astrology combines both the animal and the element to describe a person's temperament, and pairs of signs are said to either support or clash with one another. This calculator looks at both birth dates you enter, works out each person's animal sign and element, and compares them using classic compatibility patterns passed down through Chinese astrology — such as the "trine" groupings of signs that are traditionally seen as naturally harmonious, and the opposing signs that sit six positions apart on the zodiac wheel and are traditionally seen as more challenging pairings.
Each of the twelve signs carries its own set of traditionally associated characteristics: Rats are considered clever and resourceful, Oxen dependable and hardworking, Tigers bold and confident, Rabbits gentle and diplomatic, Dragons ambitious and charismatic, Snakes wise and intuitive, Horses energetic and independent, Goats artistic and gentle, Monkeys witty and inventive, Roosters observant and hardworking, Dogs loyal and honest, and Pigs generous and easygoing. These traits form the foundation for how compatibility between two signs is traditionally interpreted — for instance, the Rat, Dragon, and Monkey are considered one of the four harmonious "trine" groupings, believed to share common values and an easy natural rapport.
Because each animal sign repeats its element pairing only once every ten years, two people can share the same animal sign but have different elements, resulting in noticeably different personalities according to tradition. A Fire Tiger, for example, is traditionally described as more intense and impulsive than a calmer, more grounded Earth Tiger. This calculator's element score adds this extra layer of nuance on top of the base animal compatibility, giving a more complete picture than looking at the animal sign alone.
In many East Asian cultures, checking zodiac compatibility has historically played a role in matchmaking discussions, sometimes alongside conversations with family elders before a marriage was formally arranged.
